The Lawyers’ Committee for Better Housing (LCBH) believes that every individual and family is entitled to decent housing as a basic need and human right. For over thirty years, LCBH has defended the rights of tenants to have safe, accessible, and affordable housing on a non-discriminatory basis through education, outreach, supportive services, advocacy, and legal representation impacting over 10,000 Chicago area renters each year. LCBH provides free legal assistance to low and moderate-income renters facing eviction and other serious housing issues. With the help of our volunteers, LCBH represents almost 500 individuals and families in court each year.
LCBH also offers supportive services for the most vulnerable legal clients to create a more holistic approach to services beyond the immediate legal crisis. This includes assessment, assistance in locating alternative affordable housing, applying for emergency funding, screening for public benefits, and providing links to other essential services. This multi-disciplinary and holistic approach has proven an effective way to assist clients in moving towards a goal of attaining more stable housing beyond the immediate crisis. Legal interns will work as part of an interdisciplinary team of attorneys and social work students to best advocate on behalf of low-income tenants.
LCBH is currently accepting applications for Fall 2015 legal internship positions in its downtown office. Please download the announcement or view out postings at www.IllinoisProBono.org. For more information, please contact Samira Nazem at firstname.lastname@example.org.
