Ways To Give
The Lawyers’ Committee for Better Housing is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization. All donations to LCBH are tax deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law. Your donations directly benefit our general fund, or any specific LCBH program based on your designation.
Your secure online gift can be made by clicking here. LCBH will not share your personal information with any other organizations or businesses.
Credit Card Donations
If you prefer to make a credit card donation over the phone, please call our Development Director, Kathy Caudill, at 312/784-3515.
Mailing a Donation
Please help LCBH help tenants by sending your tax-deductible gift to:
Kathryn L. Caudill, Director of Development
Lawyers’ Committee for Better Housing
33 N. LaSalle Street, Suite 900
Chicago, IL 60602
Many employers have a matching gift program which can double, or possibly triple, the impact of your generous charitable donation to LCBH. Simply request a matching gift form from your employer, complete and sign the form, and send to LCBH.
Please consider remembering LCBH in your Will or Trust. The official name of the organization is Lawyers’ Committee for Better Housing. LCBH’s federal identification number is 36-3134577.
The simplest way to make a planned gift is to make an outright bequest. For example, “I hereby give, devise and bequeath to Lawyers’ Committee for Better Housing, 33 N. LaSalle Street, Suite 900, Chicago, IL 60602, the sum of $__________________.”
Residuary bequests can also be made. This provides an opportunity to make sure that specific bequests and estate expenses are paid first. The residuary bequest would provide a certain percentage of the remainder of an estate (after debts, specific bequests, estate expenses, and taxes have been paid). A residuary bequest to LCBH could state: “I hereby give, devise and bequeath all (or ___ percent) of my residuary estate to Lawyers’ Committee for Better Housing, 33 N. LaSalle Street, Suite 900, Chicago, IL 60602.”
Interested in donating stock to LCBH? Or naming LCBH as the beneficiary of a life insurance policy or retirement plan? We are happy to work with you and your tax or estate planning professionals. For more information about bequests and other opportunities for making a planned gift or a major gift to LCBH, or to set up an appointment to discuss such a gift, please contact Kathy Caudill at email@example.com or 312.784.3515.
Cy pres Donations
Under the cy pres (French for "as close as possible") doctrine and Illinois law, residual funds from class action settlements can be distributed to organizations that indirectly benefit the class and advance the public interest. Lawyers’ Committee for Better Housing (LCBH) is an appropriate beneficiary for such distributions of cy pres and court settlement funds.
Cy pres distributions should be "as close as possible" to the original purpose of the case. For example, in a class action involving predatory lending practices that resulted in people losing their homes, there could be a distribution of the remaining class action funds to an organization that addresses housing issues.
With cy pres and court approved settlement funds, LCBH can continue to work tirelessly on behalf of tenants, defending the rights of all people to live in safe, decent, accessible and affordable housing, and advocating in court for those who are often not heard without an advocate by their side.
Awards can be unrestricted, for general support, or can be designated to fund particular LCBH programming.
For more information about cy pres awards and other court approved settlement funds, and how you can make in impact by directing such an award to LCBH, contact Kathy Caudill at firstname.lastname@example.org or 312.784.3515.
