2014 Annual Reception & Awards Ceremony

2014 Annual Reception & Awards Ceremony

On October 28th, LCBH presented our 34th Annual Awards. McGuireWoods generously hosted the event and their beautiful space was the perfect setting for our celebration honoring those who have made exceptional contributions to help preserve the vitality, diversity and affordability of Chicago's neighborhoods!

We applaud and congratulate all of our awardees!

We thank Congresswoman Robin Kelly and Veeda Pryor for their thoughtful remarks, McGuireWoods and Geoff Cockrell for hosting us, our generous donors for sponsoring the event, and everyone who turned out to make the night so enjoyable. Thank you!

Robin Kelly, Illinois Congresswoman (2nd District)
Robin Kelly was elected to represent Illinois’ 2nd Congressional District on April 9, 2013. Since taking office, Kelly has worked tirelessly to promote national safety and expand economic opportunity, sponsoring numerous bills to generate job growth and end senseless gun violence. Kelly’s first legislation, Improving Gun Safety Standards Act, a common sense reform bill, would allow the Consumer Product Safety Commission to issue safety standards for guns and ammunition that will help reduce gun-related deaths. As a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, Kelly currently serves on the Oversight and Government Reform Committee, the Economic Growth, Job Creation, and Regulatory Affairs and the National Security Subcommittee.

Before her election to Congress, Kelly was chief administrative officer of Cook County, where she was responsible for managing the day-to-day operations and implementing policy for the second largest county in the United States. Earlier, she served as chief of staff of the Illinois State Treasurer’s Office, becoming the first African-American woman to hold that position in a constitutional office in Illinois. Kelly attended Bradley University in Peoria, where she earned her B.A. in psychology and an M.A. in counseling. She later received a Ph.D. in political science from Northern Illinois University.

Veeda Pryor, Tenant
Veeda Pryor was raised in a single family bungalow on Chicago’s west side. Religion and a love of education were extremely important in Veeda’s home. Veeda obtained her Bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois and is looking forward to the day when she can obtain a much needed 2nd degree. For the majority of her life, Veeda has been an active member of a church, singing and directing the choir and teaching Sunday School. Landlords, rent rules and stipulations were not a part of her carefree “bounce the ball on the ceiling”, “sing whenever you want” life. Veeda first experienced housing discrimination in Forest Park in 1985, when a potential landlord advised that she did not rent to children. Veeda was 23 at the time, and employed as a teacher, so age or employment did not appear to be the basis of the landlord’s actions, her battles with landlords began.

Veeda is the mother of three wonderful adult children – Porsche, Brandon, and Breia. She first came in contact with Lawyers’ Committee for Better Housing in 2007, when she was going through an eviction process with a property that had rodents and no heat. LCBH represented Veeda and won her eviction case.

Thanks to the legal representation and supportive services provided to Veeda by LCBH Legal Director, Mark Swartz and Supportive Services Director John Paul Beals, as well as the education about renters rights she has received throughout her eviction matter, Veeda now has the tools to deal with landlords and housing issues, and knows she has found trusted friends and advocates at LCBH.
