Chicago Says "No" to Discrimination Against Members of the Military

As of March 16, 2016, it is illegal to discriminate in Chicago against veterans, active duty military personnel, members of the reserve, and members of the National Guard. The City of Chicago has prepared several flyers, fact sheets and FAQ's to help inform people about new rules.

Disparate Impact

Disparate Impact is a legal doctrine under the Fair Housing Act which means that a policy or practice may be considered discriminatory if it has a disproportionate "adverse impact" against any group based on race, national origin, color, religion, sex, familial status, or disability.

The primary goal of John Marshall’s Fair Housing Legal Support Center is to educate the public about fair housing law and to provide legal assistance to those private or public organizations that seek to eliminate discriminatory housing practices. John Marshall's Fair Housing Legal Clinic was established in 1993 by co-founding Professors F. Wills Caruso and Michael P. Seng, and is one of the few law school clinics in the U.S. devoted exclusively to fair housing training and enforcement.

The solution to housing discrimination starts with you. If you have been trying to buy or rent a house or apartment and you believe your rights have been violated, contact HUD or your local fair housing center. The Fair Housing Act prohibits housing discrimination because of race, color, sex, religion, national origin, familial status or disability.

I found the perfect apartment near a park and public transportation. I asked for a reasonable accommodation for my service dog, but the landlord told me “no pets –try someplace else.” SoI called HUD and found out it’s illegal for a housing provider to prohibit service animals. I filed a complaint, and now my dog and I have a great place to live.
