Each summer, I’m reminded why I decided to call Chicago home more than three decades ago. After months of winter isolation, the city comes to life again – families walk along the Lakefront Trail, colleagues meet for lunch in Daley Plaza, and whole neighborhoods gather for street festivals and block parties. There’s an unmistakable energy to Chicago in the summer, one rooted in connection, belonging, and community.
That same spirit of togetherness has been at the core of LCBH’s work since 1980. To us, housing justice is more than just filing motions and appearing in court; it’s about people: neighbors, families, and allies coming together to ensure everyone has a safe and stable place to call home.
This June has offered many reminders of the strength and joy of togetherness. As you read on, you’ll meet one of our incredible Staff Attorneys, Spencer Haydary, who was recently recognized on the Windy City Times 30 Under 30 list for his LGBTQ+ advocacy and organizing – an honor made even sweeter as we celebrated Pride Month in our office and beyond! Read more.
You’ll also learn about our recent community-based legal clinic supported by LCBH’s pro bono partners at Jones Day and Koch that brought resources directly to tenants in need, and you’ll hear how our Buildings Program is partnering with tenant organizations in troubled buildings to demand urgent repairs. Each story reflects the impact we can make when we move together toward a more just Chicago.
And as we look ahead, I hope you’ll join us in celebrating this spirit of community in person at our Annual Fall Benefit on October 9th, 2025, at Buddy Guy’s Legends. Together, we will celebrate the people who’ve made our work possible for 45 years and counting, including LCBH co-founder, David Orr. Thank you for being part of this work with us.
