We’re pleased to announce that long-time tenant organizer and friend of LCBH, John Bartlett, will receive the 2nd Annual LCBH Community Partner Award at our 2026 Fall Benefit on October 15th, 2026.
The LCBH Community Partner Award honors people and organizations who support LCBH in advancing our mission in Cook County through coalition building, policy advocacy, and renter outreach. We are proud to recognize John’s leadership in tenant organizing and his commitment to creating networks that uplift renters’ rights. By encouraging us to work together, more renters have access to critical housing services.
Beginning in the late ‘90s, John held multiple roles at the Metropolitan Tenants Organization, including a 32-year stint as executive director, where he established the organization’s overall vision and goals. He directed the implementation of several new programs, including MTO’s Healthy Homes Program, HUD Organizing program, and a citywide tenants’ hotline, which receives calls from more than 10,000 tenants annually.
John was vital in establishing a partnership between our organizations, helping connect renters in tenant associations formed by MTO with LCBH for legal aid. Together, we empowered tenant associations across the city to win millions of dollars in repairs, relocation assistance, and rent forgiveness.
He also worked alongside LCBH staff and other housing advocates on multiple legislative campaigns to strengthen legal protections for renters, including the Chicago Condominium Ordinance, the Chicago Fair Notice Ordinance, and other reforms to the Residential Landlord Tenant Ordinance. Rather than being constrained by legal precedent or accepted practice, John would identify where the law or practice unfairly disadvantaged renters and seek creative ways to challenge an unjust system. He brought that same approach to advancing reforms to make housing policies fairer for everyone.
